The PI. properly belongs only to common nouns, not to proper names, names of materials, or abstracts; still, such nouns in certain relations take the PL, namely, when they express the idea of the common noun, thus, (1) Proper names, (a) in indicating several individuals of the same name, e. g. dvo KatiXoi; (b) in denoting persons that possess the nature or the qualities of the individual named, e. g. PL Theaet. 169, b. oi 'hq axXitc te xal Oijoi ig, men like H. and Th. (2) Names of materials occur somewhat often in the PL, since either the single parts, which make up the material, or the different kinds of which it is composed, are contemplated, e. g. y/a fta&o i, nvnol xal xqi& a I; ijXtot, sun-beams, like soles; avtftoi xal vdaxa, oivot noXvxtXtlq, olroi naXaioi; i)Xa xal Xl&og, etc. (3) Abstracts in the PL denote classes and specific instances, particular conditions and circumstances, e. g.
